Né à Minneapolis, Tom Arndt s’est attaché à photographier son Minnesota natal. S’inscrivant dans la grande tradition de la photographie documentaire américaine, il nous livre un album de famille : ses habitants, ses rues, ses vitrines, ses comptoirs de café, ses parcs, ses grands évènements populaires, avec une très grande empathie et une grande dignité. Le misérabilisme n’y a pas sa place. Comme le souligne son ami et écrivain, Garrison Keillor, Tom Arndt photographie «l’ADN de la culture du Minnesota, c’est-à-dire les pauvres et les exclus».

Très attaché à l’argentique, Arndt nous livre des tirages d’une exceptionnelle beauté. Amoureux des papiers photographiques, il ne peut concevoir une journée sans passer plusieurs heures dans son laboratoire.

Arndt a obtenu une licence en beaux-arts au Minneapolis College of Art and Design (1968) et a fait des études supérieures à l’université du Minnesota (1969-1971). Ses photographies ont été exposées au Walker Art Center de Minneapolis, au Museum of Modern Art de New York, au Minneapolis Institute of Art, au Minneapolis College of Art and Design et dans d’autres institutions. Ses œuvres font partie des collections permanentes de l’Art Institute of Chicago, du Museum of Modern Art, New York, du San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, de la George Eastman House, Rochester, New York, du Los Angeles County Museum of Art et du Walker Art Center, Minneapolis.

En 2023, le magazine Leica Fotographie International publie un portfolio issu de l'ouvrage American Reflections, publié en 2022 par les ateliers EXB.
