Présentation

Ernst Haas (1921-1986) est reconnu comme l'un des grands photographes du XXe siècle, et fait partie des pionniers de la photographie en couleur. Il est né à Vienne en 1921 et a commencé à photographier après la guerre. Son travail sur le retour des prisonniers de guerre autrichiens attira l'attention de LIFE, mais il déclina la proposition de devenir photographe attitré du magazine pour garder son indépendance. Il rejoint Magnum en 1949 à l'invitation de Robert Capa, et se lia d'amitié avec lui ainsi qu'avec Henri Cartier-Bresson et Werner Bishof.

Il s'installa à New York en 1951 et commença rapidement à utiliser le film couleur Kodachrome, jusqu'à devenir le premier photographe couleur des années 50. En 1953, LIFE publia un reportage photo de vingt-quatre pages sur son travail sur New York : ce fut le plus grand reportage en couleur jamais publié par le magazine  (Images of a magic city. Austrian photographer finds fresh wonder in New York's familiar sights).
En 1962, juste avant de prendre sa retraite, Steichen lui consacra la première exposition de photographie couleur au MoMA, quatorze ans avant la célèbre exposition Eggleston.    

Haas voyagea de manière intensive durant toute sa carrière, travaillant pour LIFE, Vogue, Look ou Esquire. Il publia plusieurs livres tout au long de sa vie : The Creation (1971), In America (1975), In Germany (1976), and Himalayan Pilgrimage (1978). En 1986, l'année de sa mort, il reçut le prix Hasselblad.
