roger ballen.! drawing meets photography

Museum Dr. Guislain Gent

Birds, rats, bodies, rooms, scratches, masks; real or not real?

This is the world of Roger Ballen. The Ballenesque theatre performs and the audience joins in on demand. The scenes are confusing, relatable, tangible, absurd, appealing, impossible - yet real. They draw you beneath the surface, into the seams and spaces of your own inner world. Roger Ballen doesn’t go in search of something; he - we - are the search.

To enter the exhibition is to wander through the human psyche. You stagger between delusion and reality, the conscious and unconscious, harmony and chaos.

Don't understand what you see. Completely understand it. See it all.

Roger Ballen (born 1950, New York) is among the most influential art photographers of the 21st century. With a career spanning more than fifty years, he developed a completely unique visual language - so recognizable that it is referred to as Ballenesque.
