Albarran Cabrera Spanish, b. 1969
Ángel Albarrán (born 1969, Barcelona) and Anna Cabrera (born 1969, Seville) have collaborated since 1996, developing a photographic practice guided by a philosophy of memory and experience, as well as a deep curiosity for photographic chemistry. Influenced by both Western and Eastern artists and thinkers, their images challenge notions of time, place, and identity, fostering a new understanding of personal perception. For them, interpreting their surroundings is not just an essential part of life—it is life itself.
For Albarrán Cabrera, photography serves as a philosophical tool for investigating reality. Initially interested in recording the visible world, they quickly shifted their focus to exploring its underlying structures. Their images function as research notebooks, documenting their intellectual inquiry. Their search for new forms of expression has led them to develop alternative processes that expand the language of photography. Viewing an image as both a visual entity and a physical object, they devote considerable effort to the materialization of their ideas in printed photographs. In their darkroom, they experiment with techniques and materials to deepen the meaning of their work, considering the printing process as the final element in their photographic syntax.
To date, they have published seven books, including two recently in France with Atelier EXB: Des oiseaux (2020) and À l’écoute des arbres (2023). Their publications have received numerous awards and recognitions. Their work has been exhibited across Europe, the United States, and Japan in major galleries and art fairs such as Paris Photo, Art Basel, ARCO, and AIPAD. Their pieces are also part of prestigious private and institutional collections, including Hermès, the Goetz Collection, and Banco de Santander.
