Gerd Bonfert German, b. 1953
"The body, his body, is practically the sole object of Gerd Bonfert's research, but it is a body that eludes photography, a body that eludes us as well. In Gerd Bonfert's work, the reflection of a light source in his own eye, drawing, in front of the open diaphragm of his camera, a script of light. Thus, ghostly photographs of his face or his own body are born. He works on the spectral aspect of his body and on its almost dissolution in photographic matter."
Excerpt from Christian Bouqueret's text for the catalog of the exhibition "Le corps photographié" [The Photographed Body] at FRAC Alsace / La Filature, 1995, p. 57.
